To accelerate the development of integrated, agile switching infrastructures by focusing on:
- Integrated control planes for optical switched internets.
- Dynamic control algorithms for fault tolerance.
- Future optical network and switching architectures.
|
| Technical Approach |
 |
- Employ simulation environment to evaluate proposed IETF / OIF control plane
protocols.
- Design and evaluate dynamic control algorithms for traffic engineering, intrusion detection and
fault recovery in integrated MPLS / WDM networks.
- Identify design issues in next generation optical networks and develop models and simulations to solve them
|
| Accomplishments |
 |
- Released GMPLS/Lightwave Agile Switching Simulator (GLASS) incorporating optical node and
link models and supporting modeling of GMPLS protocols using the SSF framework.
- Extended GLASS by developing models of optical regenerators and creating routing algorithms that
incorporate reach constraints.
- Developed mathematical models of shared path recovery schemes to analyze trade-offs between reducing
recovery overhead and increasing recovery blocking.
- Created simulations of recovery schemes with various levels of backup resource pre-provisioning to
support the activities of the IETF's protection and restoration design team
- Contributed to the ongoing architectural development work for optical burst switched (OBS) networks by
participating in the OBS Forum.
