Workshop Themes

  • Define the business, technical, cultrual, and security issues of improving interconnectivity and information sharing among the principals, such as healhcare providers, physicians, patients, payers, databases, and hospitals.

  • Discuss how current information technologies address above issues.

  • Determine the drivers regarding the representation, preservation, and reuse of knowledge in healthcare interactions.

  • Define ways to reduce ambiguity in terminology and to improve or extend standardization in this area; such as, for information modeling and ontology development.

  • Determine if new functionalities and requirements, such as those imposed by HIPAA, demand additional standardization efforts beyond the current healthcare standards efforts, such as HL7, X12, NCPDP, and others.

  • Discuss the need for conformance test tools to help ensure implementation conformance to appropriate standards.

  • Provide recommendations for effective involvement of small medical practices (SMPs) in the information-based healthcare infrastructure.
