Workshop for Conformity Assessment for Java(TM)
The Workshop for Conformity Assessment for Java(TM) was held on September 11-12, 1997. The workshop was sponsored by the NIST Information Technology Laboratory (ITL), the IEEE Computer Society and the Defense Information Systems Agency’s (DISA) Center for Standards. Twenty-eight attendees participated in the workshop.
The workshop provided an open forum for all interested parties to present current conformity assessment efforts, discuss possible testing philosophies and methodologies for the varying Java technologies, and to formulate a direction forward. The workshop identified current testing tools and certification programs as well as areas of research and market-need that are not currently being addressed. NIST/ITL has initiated a Java conformance testing project to address these areas.
The availability of IT solutions that correctly implement the open Java standards will serve to grow the market for Java-based products. From a business perspective developers who can show that they have faithfully implemented the standard can stand out from those who cannot make such claims. Conformity assessment methods that can help build correct Java implementations are necessary to ensure the consistency and accurate use of the Java specification now and in the future.
