Impetus/How Project Began
|
The project began with a request from SEMATECH, a consortium of major
U.S. semiconductor manufacturers, to form a team to update NBS
Handbook 91 on Experimental Statistics by providing more modern
statistical techniques and examples related to the semiconductor
industry.
The project has evolved to an online Handbook of Engineering
Statistics for distribution on the world wide web that is
integrated with a free, down-loadable statistical analysis package,
Dataplot, maintained by the ITL. The project is supported by
SEMATECH and the NIST Information Technology Laboratory. The purpose
of this project is to extend the benefits of modern statistical
design and analysis to the engineering and scientific communities
and contribute to the productivity and competitiveness of U.S.
industry in world markets.
|
|
Objective(s)
|
The objective is to provide a comprehensive and complete
internet-accessible on-line handbook of statistical methods
(including experiment design) for (nominally) the semiconductor
engineer but (in fact) for the broader science/engineering community.

|
Staff Profiling and Funding
|
This project has entailed
- FTE (1998): 2.0
- FTE (1999): 2.0
- FTE (2000): 2.0
Funding is for $380 STRS.

What Work Has Been Done By Each Side Done
|
Work on the book has covered several areas.
- Design of the homepage and and standard templates and
toolbars for other pages.
- Development of prototype pages and navigation for eight
chapters on:
- Exploratory Data Analysis
- Measurement Process Characterization
- Production Process Characterization
- Process Modeling
- Process/Product Improvement
- Process/Product Monitoring
- Process/Product Comparisons
- Product Reliability.
- Development of GUIs to support statistical software for
UNIX and PC environments.
- Integration of statistical software with handbook for UNIX
and PC environments.
- Development of software macros to support case studies.
During FY 00, the majority of the time was devoted to finishing
chapters 3, 4 and 5, editing the final product, putting together case
studies with interactive computational capabilities, and developing
a system for revising and updating the document. The level of effort
for FY 00 was approximately 2 staff years at NIST, and it is
expected that the level of effort for the project in 2001 will
decrease to about 1/3 staff year at NIST.

What Developments Have Occurred and How Has the Project Changed
|
The concept of the handbook has evolved from a hardcopy update of
NBS Handbook 91 to an online handbook of statistics for engineers
and scientists that will be made available on the World Wide Web.
The approach is problem-oriented and includes detailed case studies
from the semiconductor industry and the NIST laboratories that
illustrate statistical approaches to solving engineering and
scientific problems. The treatment of examples has evolved from
reliance on detailed calculations with explicit formulas to graphical
and analytical results from statistical software packages.
Two vendors of major statistical software are in the process of
developing web sites related to the Handbook that will allow users
to analyze examples and case studies from the Handbook using
interactive computing tools. This is a very positive direction for
the Handbook because large companies tend to standardize on
statistical software packages for in-house use, and the availability
of other statistical software from within the Handbook pages will
greatly enhance its visibility and impact within these companies.
This trend will also benefit individuals and professionals who are
familiar with particular statistical software packages.

Publications or Artifacts
|
Nothing to report. The Handbook itself is the primary
publication.

What Industries Have Benefited From NIST's Work and How
|
The SEMATECH semiconductor consortium companies have access
to the Handbook from the SEMATECH web page (and will be able
to mirror the SEMATECH site to their own local web pages).
The Handbook is available to NIST scientists and engineers.
The Handbook is available to any industry/company with
web-access.

Acknowledgements of the ITL's Effort
|
We have a feedback button on our web page and have already
recieved numerous questions, comments, and corrections from
many users of the Handbook. Some of these users are
solicited users (i.e., the SEMATECH consortium companies),
but many are from companies with whom we have had no previous
contacts.

Future Related Activities
|
This e-book will wind up at the end of the calendar year. Updates
and augmentations will continue beyond on an as-needed basis.
