Timothy R. C. Read E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company The 13th Quality and Productivity Research Conference and the 3rd Spring Research Conference on Statistics in Industry and Technology were held jointly at NIST in Gaithersburg, MD from May 29 through May 31, 1996. The goal of the conference was to stimulate interdisciplinary research among statisticians, engineers, and physical scientists in quality and productivity, with a focus on industrial needs, specifically in the physical and engineering sciences. The conference, which included both invited and contributed paper sessions, featured presentations by scientists and engineers for statisticians and presentations by statisticians for scientists and engineers. Applications-oriented papers addressed opportunities for statistical researchers to impact the application area. Similarly, statistics-oriented papers addressed the use of statistical methods in specific applied problems of engineering or scientific interest. Statistical issues and research approaches drawn from collaborations were highlighted. Several members of the Statistical Engineering Division presented papers at the conference. The conference was sponsored jointly by NIST, E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, the American Statistical Association, and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics. Eric Lagergren and Raghu Kacker were conference co-chairs, Will Guthrie was contributed papers chair, Lisa Gill was local arrangements chair and Mark Vangel was student scholarships chair.
