Digital Media Group (DMG)
Government Information Preservation Working Group

GIPWoG meeting October, 2004 at GSA, Washington, D.C.

Slides from the October 14, meeting include:

NARA
Bob Chadduck - Overview and update of NARA's Electronic Records Archive (ERA) program.

The electronic records challenge is formidable, but as an agency, NARA is committed to addressing this challenge head on. NARA’s vision is to create a system (called the Electronic Records Archive - ERA) that will authentically preserve and provide access to any kind of electronic record, free from dependency on any specific hardware or software, enabling NARA to carry out its mission into the future. An overview and current status will be presented.

NASA
J. Steven Hughes - PDS and OODT
Overview of NASA's Planetary Data System (PDS) and Object Oriented Data Technology (OODT) for distributing and accessing scientific data from geographically distributed repositories. The Planetary Data System (PDS) is the official science data archive for NASA’s planetary science community and currently contains about 10 terabytes of data collected from over thirty years of solar system exploration missions. The PDS is an online archive that consists of several geographically distributed science discipline nodes. These nodes support the production of archive quality data products, curate the products, and provide supporting science and technical expertise to the planetary science community.

NIST
Fred Byers - Life expectancy test for DVD - A shortened alternative (latest update).
Overview and the latest update on the development of an alternative and shortened method to identify media suitable for archival use. The goal is to develop a measurement to determine whether a piece of media (specifically DVD) will be readable after a set number of years (rather than measuring the actual life expectancy of the media). This type of measurement will allow manufacturers to design products to a specific known minimum standard and will assure users of the quality of the media they use for archiving purposes.

Imation, Philips
Rusty Rosenberger and Dr. Jim Kwiecien (Imation) and Frank Simonis (Philips) - Archival Storage System - Concept introduction.
1. Introduce archival storage system concept being jointly developed by Philips and Imation. The primary design objective is to produce "certified" storage solutions (drives, media, and software) using DVD and Blu-ray formats while maintaining broad compatibility with the installed base of both formats. Show how various grades of media can be developed and certified to match a range of archival storage requirements. 2. Present an opportunity to the members of the working group to participate as a beta test for our concept.
