ITL’s Work in Web3D is Noted
Progress in creating 3D for the Web by Sandy Ressler, a member of the Information Access Division (IAD) in ITL, and others was noted in a recent article in Federal Computer Week. The article which is available online at:
http://www.fcw.com/fcw/articles/2001/0326/tec-3d-03-26-01.asp notes how the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML), the only non-proprietary standard for 3D on the Internet, is making inroads to several agencies such as NASA, the Department of Justice, and the Army. The Web3D Consortium's continuing evolution of VRML towards X3D- and XML- (Extensible Markup Language) based encoding of VRML, work supported by NIST projects, will eventually lead to 3D data becoming a native data type for the Web. IAD is developing web-based tools to help developers of VRML content create more efficient virtual worlds, as well as to help people in the transition from VRML to X3D. X3D is the next generation of VRML which encodes VRML with an XML tagset making it more suitable for integration with the rest of the technologies being deployed throughout the Web. In addition, IAD is working through the Web3D Consortium to put in place a "Core 3D Profile," which is a subset of VRML that will be included in MPEG-4. Sandy Ressler serves as Vice President in the Web3D Consortium. The W3D Consortium was formed to provide a forum for the creation of open standards for Web3D specifications; it oversees the development and evolution of the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) ISO standard and seeks to bring a variety of industrial partners together using 3D graphics for the Web via an open standards process. Prominant members of the consortium currently include Sony, Philips, blaxxun Interactive, Shout Interactive, and Sun Microsystems. The efforts of the W3D Consortium should lead to the ubiquitous use of 3D interfaces for both entertainment and scientific applications via the Web.
