ITL Sponsors Third International MPEG-7 Awareness Event for Next Generation Multimedia Standard

ITL’s Information Access Division (IAD) sponsored and hosted the Third International Awareness Event for MPEG-7 – the next generation multimedia standard held May 3-4, 2002 in Fairfax, VA.  The program was chaired by Wo Chang from IAD.  Over 70 representatives from industry and government attended.  The program included   presentations of future directions of content technology, MPEG-7 tutorials, application solutions by content vendors, and application demonstrations.   Presentation topics included  “Multimedia Content for eLearning” and “An Overview of the Digital Media Market”.  More than 20 vendors participated in this event to present and demonstrate their MPEG-7 prototype solutions focusing on audio and visual content extraction, annotation, indexing, and retrieval technology.

MPEG-7 is the newest international multimedia standard, released by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in December 2001. The MPEG-7 standard, also known as "Multimedia Content Description Interface," aims to provide standardized, core technologies allowing metadata description of audio-visual data content in multimedia environments. This standard offers highly sophisticated management for searching and filtering multimedia content.  This standard was developed by a range of experts including, content creators, broadcasters, manufacturers, publishers, intellectual property rights managers, telecommunication service providers, academia, and government.

Currently, Wo Chang serves as the Chair of the ISO/IEC/WG11 MPEG-7 Interoperability and Profiling group and is the Technical Group Chair and a member of the Executive Board of the MPEG-7 Alliance.  Chang also serves as the webmaster for the official MPEG-7 website, the NIST MPEG-4 software repository website, and the overall MPEG working document website.
