ITL’s Chang’s Work on SMIL 2.0 Multimedia Test suite is Noted by W3C

Recently, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)'s Synchronized Multimedia (SYMM) Working Group recognized the work of Wo Chang, of the Information Access Division, for his contribution of hosting and editing the Synchronized Multimedia Integrated Language (SMIL) 2.0 interoperability test suite. This interoperability test suite was seen by W3C as vital for SMIL 2.0 becoming a W3C Recommendation. Announced and released on August 9, 2001, the SMIL 2.0 Recommendation represents a cross-industry agreement on an XML-based language that allows authors to write interactive multimedia presentations.

Chang has a long association history with W3C. He is one of the original members of SYMM WG started in 1996. He helped to create one of the early SMIL 1.0 public reference implementations and hosted the SMIL 1.0 interoperability test suite via the Web. In addition, he helped organize the first SMIL 1.0 interoperability testing at NIST in March 1998. With the recent SMIL 2.0 Recommendation, editing and hosting the interoperability test suite became a difficult task. Mainly, the rich functionality of SMIL 2.0 caused the size of the test suite to grow many fold; the number of companies involved in testing also increased. However, Chang managed the development of the test suite in a timely fashion. All of the testing was conducted very efficiently and effectively, according to W3C Interaction Domain Leader, Dr. Phillip Hoschka. Major participants for using the test suite include: Glocomm, IBM, Intel, Macromedia, Microsoft, Netscape/AOL, Nokia, Oratrix, Panasonic, Philips, RealNetworks, WGBH, CWI (Centre for Mathematics and Computer Science, the Netherlands), INRIA (Institut National De Recherce en Informatique et en Automatique, France), and NIST.

Both the SMIL 2.0 press release and SMIL 2.0 interoperability test suite can be found at http://www.w3.org/2001/08/smil2-press release and http://www.w3.org/2001/SMIL20/testsuite/ respectively.
