  • Link Detection Task

The Link Detection task evaluates a TDT system that detects if two stories are "linked" by the same event. For TDT, two stories are linked if they discuss the same event. Unlike other TDT tasks, link detection wasn't motivated by a hypothetical application, but rather the task of detecting when stories are linked is a "kernel" function from which the other TDT tasks can be built.

The link detection task focuses on the core technologies used to compare two stories. The evaluation permits information like time to be a feature available to a link detection system, but in it's simplest form, the system is presented with the texts of two stories.

To learn more about technology used to do TDT Link Detection, or to learn how well these systems perform, there were two system description papers submitted for the 1999 TDT workshop.
