Taming the Wolf in Sheep's Clothing: Privacy in Multimedia Communications

Paper Summary:

This paper reports the results of a set of interviews within a professional association about privacy issues related to the broadcast of presentations made at conferences. The interviews included 24 members of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).

Due to the members trust in the organization, very few privacy concerns were raised regarding the broadcast of presentations. Respondents raised the issue of information usage (defined as the unauthorized editing of recorded multimedia presentations) as their number one concern.

The authors point out that the members of the association had a high level of trust in the task force and therefore, were less concerned about privacy issues. However, during the course of the interviews, several real and potential privacy threats were raised. These issues would never have been raised had it not been for the interview process.

The authors believe that the organization has responsibility to identify and communicate privacy issues and threats with its members or risk the possibility of losing the trust and confidence of its members. The authors cite various research studies that have shown that if privacy issues are "not addressed before they become paramount, this may decrease the trust bond between the organization and the information providers."

Therefore, they conclude that in order to retain trust levels, individuals must be notified of potential privacy risks.
