This paper discusses the Kandinsky system for generating "aesthetic information collages." An aesthetic information collage is "designed to be a type of ambient information display in a decorative object." The authors believe that traditional devises were developed to convey information and designed their system to be aesthetically pleasing, with the added benefit of information.
The Kandinsky system is made up of a subsystem called "ImageConjure" which converts text into a set of representative images which are then mixed into a collage template to convey information. The collage is created based on a set of complex algorithms dealing with various criteria, including visual matching (color, texture, etc.) and layout criteria (overlapping images, grid structure, etc.).
The goal of the system is to create displays that are first aesthetically interesting and second able to convey information.
