The goal of CareMedia is to provide caregivers with a more accurate view of a patients' behavior by video-taping a patients' activities and automatically analyzing the video to provide detailed information on a user's activities.

During the study, four cameras and microphones were mounted in a Pittsburg nursing home. Patients were recorded for eight hours a day, for seven days. The automated system was able to track people, identify and label individuals, and identify what the individual was doing. For purposes of this study, two types of activities were monitored: eating in the dining room and personal hygiene in front of a mirror.

Based on the evaluation, the system was quite effective in tracking individuals and automatically identifying their behaviors.

The project team is currently working with nurses and physicians to develop an interface to present the results in a suitable format.
