Paper Summary:

This paper presents a comparison evaluation of two websites, an adaptive website and a traditional website to determine which is more effective.

The adaptive system, called PUSH, chooses what information to show users by inferring the types of information users are seeking. The system uses a user's selections to infer the user's purpose and effectively display only the information that is relevant to that task, while the traditional website allows users to browse through categories of information to find what they are looking for.

Results of the testing include:

  • The adaptive system reduced the number of within page navigation (presumably because users did not have to search for information)
  • The adaptive system influenced participants' answers to questions, in that participants used the information provided by the adaptive system to answer the task scenarios
  • Participants rated their satisfaction with the adaptive system higher than the non-adaptive system
  • Participants were able to complete tasks in less time on the adaptive system
