Paper Summary: |
The authors of the paper introduce the Privacy Awareness System (paws). This framework gives people the ability to respect others' privacy and to rely on corresponding social and legal norms for enforcement. Following is an example of pawS:
- Upon entering a ubicomp environment, a privacy beacon notifies (notice) the user of data collection via wireless communication
- A user's privacy assistant sends the info to the user's personal privacy proxy on the internet
- The proxy pulls the user's privacy policies and compares the policies to the data collection to either accept or decline (choice and consent)
This system is based on the six principles Langheinrich presented at Ubicomp 2001. Although the system does not deal with anonymity / pseudonymity and security, it does address the other four privacy principles: notice, choice / consent, proximity / locality, and access / recourse.
