Paper Summary: |
Advances in technology have made communication between individuals possible anytime and anywhere, but not always in the most socially acceptable fashion. The authors of this paper explore a communication system in the Georgia Tech Aware Home that provides situational clues to inform personal and family communication in an intra-home intercom system. The system provides location and activity information to participants which help them determine whether to begin a conversation with a family member in another part of the house. The second system developed is an inter-home communication system in which individuals can provide information to other individuals regarding their availability (not available, do not disturb, etc). These signals help to inform personal communication and enable users to control interruptions and to determine socially acceptable forms of communication.
