Paper Summary: |
The Home Media Space (HMS) is a always-on video media space used within a home setting. The purpose of this article is to focus on balancing privacy and awareness in compromising home situations. The authors discuss privacy mechanisms used by humans in natural environment, including:
- verbal behavior,
- non-verbal behavior,
- environmental mechanisms, and
- cultural mechanisms.
Based on these types of privacy-protecting strategies, the authors suggest that the development of an HMS should be based on the following design principles:
- Leverage existing privacy mechanisms
- Regulate privacy using implicit actions sensed through context-aware technology
- Warn users about actions and provide an opportunity to stop the operation
- Regulate privacy using explicit actions based on dedicated physical controls
- Use visual and audio feedback to easily discern the state of the system
The authors then describe how they have used implemented these design principles into a HMS.
