November 1996: Publish "Interactive 3D Visualization for Document Retrieval", describing spiral model, 3D axes model and circular model.
January 1997: Start design of second generation model: features to include keyword to concept mapping, explicit concept-based clustering, and user marking of documents and clusters.
March 1997: Complete implementation of spoke-and-wheel model with above features. Use matrix for keyword->concept map. Similar clusters laid out around a circle circumference (single dimension).
June 1997: Publish "Document Clustering in Concept Space: The NIST Information Retrieval Visualization Engine (NIRVE)", describing the spoke model.
August 1997: Complete implementation of 2D version of spoke model.
October 1997: Start design of model that uses 3D more aggressively.
February 1998: Complete implementation of sphere model and 2D equivalent. Similar clusters laid out around spherical surface (two dimensions). Arcs used to represent cluster relationships. Use keyword dragging for concept map. Document titles laid out in 2D when cluster is opened.
March 1998: Start formal usability testing with Catholic University
August 1998: Formal usability testing complete.
January 1999: Submit papers on formal usability testing to SIGIR'99 and CHI'99.
August 1999: Publish "Visualization of Search Results: A Comparative Evaluation of Text, 2D, and 3D Interfaces"
