How to Order NIST Technical Publications

NIST publications are sold by the Government Printing Office (GPO) and by the National Technical Information Service (NTIS). To purchase a NIST publication you must have the order number.

Finding order numbers:

Order numbers and prices are available from the NIST Public Inquiries Unit at (301) 975-3058. Mailing address: NIST Public Inquiries, Administration Bldg. A903, NIST, Gaithersburg, Md., 20899-0001.

Titles of NIST publications are also included in the online catalog of the NIST Virtual Library. This listing includes all holdings of the NIST library, not just NIST publications.

Titles and ordering information for some NIST publications can also be found in the NIST Technipubs.

Ordering from GPO:

GPO is the best source to obtain a high-quality, printed copy of a recent NIST Publication. They will accept check, money order, VISA, or Mastercard, or you can establish a deposit account. Orders should be sent to the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. 20402-9325. For more information, or to place an order, call (202) 512-1800. You also may place an order using a Superintendent of Documents order form or online.

Ordering from NTIS:

NTIS has a broader selection of NIST publications for sale, and is the best source for older materials. Certain NIST publications, such as Interagency Reports (NISTIR's) and Grant/Contract Reports (GCR's) are only availble from NTIS. NTIS may have a few printed copies of recent publications for sale, or they can supply microfiche, or a paper copy, at any time. Orders should be sent to NTIS, Springfield, Va. 22161. Ordering from the Library of Congress:

Photo duplicated copies of many old NBS publications can be purchased from the Library of Congress. Write to the Photo duplication Service, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. 20540 or call (202)707-5640.

Obtaining publications from libraries:

NIST/NBS publications may be available at a depository library for government publications. GPO has information on depository libraries, or your local library should also be able to identify the nearest depository library.

Subscribing to Serial Publications:

Subscriptions for print copies of the NIST Journal of Research are available from the Government Printing Office. Call, (202)512-2408. FAX: (202)512-2233. NIST also publishes the Journal of Research online.

The Journal of Physical and Chemical Reference Data, published for NIST by the American Chemical Society and the American Institute of Physics is available from the American Chemical Society, 1155 Sixteenth St., N.W., Washington, D.C., 20036-9976.
